October in Salem is crazy in general because of the witch hysteria and all the Haunted Happenings things going on, but the most insane night of them all is October 31. Being in downtown Salem the night of Halloween is an experience everyone should experience. It is something that you will never forget.
Before Halloween even came I was in a panic. My friend that wanted to go into downtown bailed on me last minute because she did not know if going in would good idea with her panic attacks. So now here I am a week before halloween wondering who I’m going with. Luckily for me my one of my friends from high school was going in with a bunch of her new friends from college. She wanted some else there from the area, since she was supposed to be the tour guide for the night. I was glad to help, and now my plans were back on track.
I decided on being a boxer girl for halloween, I knew it might be a risky idea because the costume is not very warm, but you got to have fun while you can. I drove into Salem myself and was meeting up with my friends. Parking was not bad for me because I knew of some parking areas that were just outside of downtown. The hard part was trying to find my friend in the craziness of it all. I ended up meeting her in front of the Hollowing Wolf.
The amount of people in downtown never ceases to amaze me. There is almost no room to walk down the main streets with the attractions. After we met up we decided it was best just to take one giant loop all around downtown to see everything first, then we would decide what we wanted to do. No one really wanted to do any of the haunted houses because we really are not into that. We did go to the little vendors in the middle of downtown, and we went to the carnival. My friend and I had to laugh be cause the carnival and the vendors are from the Tops-field Fair, none of her friends knew why we were laughing because they were not from the area. We definitely knew that we wanted to see the fireworks, and in order to do the we had to make it towards the harbor near the T-station. The fireworks are my favorite part of the night because they are always my favorite.
It was a mazing to see all the police presence, since Halloween was a Saturday they were prepared. The city of Salem expected many mom people than usual, and for them to stay out longer than usual. There were a couple police towers et up all around downtown to surveil the area. Also on every corner there were atlas 10 police officers. All equipped with bikes, edgeways, quads, and cars. The officers did a very good job of keeping everything under control.
Overall the night was great and thrilling. I thought going in that I would freeze because my costume was not very warm, but I think the adrenaline from the whole night kept me warm. Downtown was buzzing as usual, and I saw some sights that I never thought I could ever see, but that’s the best part of Salem on Halloween. Some costumes people came up with were very creative, others were your typical nurse, hooters girl, super hero, etc. Of course you had the scary costumes that try to scare people as they walk by. I might have punched one of these people because I was not expecting it, and they jumped right out in front of my face. The night was successful in my eyes and a great end.

Things to do at Salem StateDuring my time at Salem State I have done many of the things from the 100 Things to do While at Salem State List. Two of the more memorable ones are numbers 25 and 50. Activity 25 is to withstand the line at Meier Hall Dunkin Donuts. I have done this on multiple occasions, but there always seems to be an interesting twist for me. One of the very first times that I visited this Dunking Donuts the line was wrapped all the way around and back to the hallway. I contemplated if I wanted to wait that long, but figured I had plenty of time to kill before my next class so why not. While in line, to pass time; I texted my friends in others school about how long the line was, and they told me I was insane to wait that long for an ice tea. The best part of this experience was when I go to be the next person in line to order, I went to look for my wallet and realized I left it in my car. I had to walk out awkwardly and make it seem like I had class right then. To say waiting in line for close to a half hour to realize I don’t have money was devastating is an understatement. The other times that I have visit the Dunks the lines have been shorter, it just takes so long for the employees to make the drinks. I’ve even had them forget that they’ve taken my order, so I have to wait even longer for my drink.
Finding a parking space is number 50 on the list. This is a horror story for any incoming commuter student. All you hear about in orientation, tours, and any upperclassman is you’ll never find a spot. They tell you to come early, and all parking is gone before 8:30 a.m., and if you move your car to go off campus, you’ll never be able to get it back. I’ve personally never had problem with finding a spot, usually I can park right away, and only a couple of times have I had to circle for like two minutes. Now that the parking garage is open I have no problem at all, there’s plenty of spots. The only downside is my first day in the garage I got hit by someone. I had one class that day and I figured I would be in and out because I had a test. I parked on the first level second spot in the row, I don't like parking I the first spot in any row. As I expected I was out of my class in 20 minutes. When I got to my car a campus police officer meet me at my car, and told me I had been hit. I asked him for the information of the girl, and he told me to call the station later for it and the accident report. Turns out they do not release this information to you for 10 days. The only thing they gave me was the girls name. So I took it upon myself to get the information. I found the girl on Facebook, and friend requested her. She accepted right away, my next step was messaging her. She was very kind and apologetic, which I appreciated, and she gave me al the information I need. I have completed other activities on the list, but these are two that really stuck out to me when rereading the list. |
