My Iconic First Day at Salem State
|
Salem, Massachusetts is often considered the Halloween capital of the world. This is a justified title after witnessing the October festivities for the first time. For Halloween I thought I would write about the Chambers of Terror haunted house on 59 Wharf Street Salem, Massachusetts. I am writing about this particular haunted house, because I spent my entire October there as an employee.
Chambers of Terror advertises itself as the scariest haunted house in Salem and that it is “BRINGING THE SCARY BACK”. After working there I can honestly say it is by far the best one in Salem and it makes other haunts in Salem look like amateur hour. It brought the scary back. The attraction is owned by Skip Dylen. Skip is a great boss, but a better haunter. He has over twenty years of experience in the haunted house business and has made the small space he purchased last September into a brilliant investment and a thrilling haunt. The building used to be a haunted house a few years ago, but never attracted the attention Skip received in just one year. For not being on a main street, Skip still brings in as much if not more traffic than the Essex Street Haunts. Skip also is not only concerned about money. He tries to make each customers experience the best he possibly can. He also gives breaks to employees when they need it and helps employees become better haunters. He also greets every person at the door with a friendly “Greetings”.
Chambers of Terror also uses high quality costumes. Skip buys expensive costumes, but also uses inexpensive materials to make a high quality haunt. The inside of the haunt has some very unique things to get you really scared. I am not going to talk about them in case you want to go to the Chambers next year. I will say that it is not your stereotypical haunt and that there is actual guiding. You do not just walk through and look around, you are guided and put into darkness. This is not just darkness, this is the darkest you will ever find yourself in. The actors just put this haunt over the top. They are incredibly scary and know how to read people’s emotions. The haunt may be on the smaller side and is not incredibly long at just seven minutes, but compared to the other haunts there is just no comparisons.
The Chambers of Terror is fairly inexpensive at just $12 per adult and $7 per child. There is often promotions Skip offers that takes $2 off though. It is open from May to October, but the spring and summer shows have only one actor. In the month of October, Skip, hires many actors to run the house. He looks to hire many teens and adults every October and does not require any acting experience. If you have a good work ethic and are excited to scare then you are likely a strong candidate. You can contact Skip or even buy tickets on his website, (http://www.chambersofterror.net/).
I strongly suggest you look into it. It sure made my October a blast.
