100 Things to Do at Salem State Before You Graduate
Work out in the Gassett Fitness Center
While at orientation last summer, all of us incoming freshman were eating outside next to Fitness Center. I could see people in the distance, working out inside the gym. I walked over to the gym to see if I could get a membership. I was told that it was free if you were a student at the school, so I signed up. That night I told myself that I would be coming to the gym once the fall semester started, so that I could get in and stay in shape.
It didn’t happen. I realized once I was settled in to my dorm and into college, I’ve never really been to a gym before. So for the entire month of September, I ate a ton of fast food and gained a bunch of weight, and I didn’t go to the gym once. The “Freshman-15” quickly turned into the “Freshman-30.” That next month of October I decided it would be a good idea to start visiting the Gassett Fitness Center, after all, it was free and only a short walk from my dorm.
Early October came by and I stepped up and went to the gym for once, with a friend. I realized that the real reason I didn’t want to go was because I didn’t know how to use any of the machines or how to work out at all. I didn’t want to risk injuring myself and was afraid people would look at me funny for doing an exercise wrong or foolishly. I asked one of my friends who was already going to the gym if I could tag along and so we went. The first week was tough. I was sore after every day but I was motivated to continue going. It also took longer to do everything, I had to learn how to do every workout and how to use every machine in order to avoid getting hurt and it was good to maximize the effects of the workout. To this day I still go to the gym six days a week, either with a friend or by myself. I lost all of the weight I gained back in September and I am in much better shape than I have ever been.
